Have you ever waited so long for something that you stopped expecting it?

That seems to be where Sarah found herself in our Scripture reading from Genesis. God had promised Abraham and Sarah a child, but years passed, then decades passed, and still no baby arrived. By the time three mysterious visitors appeared at Abraham's tent and announced that Sarah would have a son, she couldn't help but laugh.

Honestly, most of us probably would have laughed too.

It wasn't the laughter of joy. It was the laughter of disbelief. Sarah looked at her age, her circumstances, and her past disappointments and thought, "That simply isn't possible."

Yet God responded with a question that still speaks to us today: "Is anything too wonderful for the Lord?"

A year later, Sarah was laughing again—but this time it was laughter filled with joy as she held her son Isaac in her arms. The promise had become reality. The waiting had ended. God had been faithful all along.

There is good news for us in Sarah's story. We all have things we are waiting for. We wait for healing, for answers, for direction, for peace, or for loved ones to come home. Sometimes we wonder if God has forgotten us.

But Sarah's story reminds us that God is still at work even when we cannot see it. God's timing is not always our timing, but God's faithfulness never fails.

Perhaps that is why this story is filled with laughter. God has a way of surprising us. Just when we think the story is over, God writes another chapter. Just when we think nothing can change, God opens a new door.

So the next time you find yourself discouraged by waiting, remember Sarah. The God who kept His promise to her is the same God we worship today.

And who knows? Before long, God may give you a reason to laugh with joy as well.

Grace and peace,

Pastor Jim
