Sometimes following God feels a little like waiting at the DMV… or sitting through a software update that says “2 minutes remaining” for half an hour. The disciples were eager for action. They wanted Jesus to tell them exactly what would happen next and when the kingdom would arrive. Instead, Jesus basically said, “Don’t worry about the schedule—just be ready.”

That had to be frustrating. The disciples were probably hoping for charts, timelines, maps, and maybe a heavenly instruction manual. Instead, Jesus told them to wait, pray, and trust. Then He ascended into heaven while they stood there staring at the sky like folks who just watched the last firework on the Fourth of July.

I love that image because it feels very human. The disciples didn’t instantly become fearless superheroes of faith. They were still learning. Still wondering. Still standing around asking, “Now what?”

And maybe that sounds familiar.

We spend a lot of time wanting God to hurry up and explain things. We want answers now. We want clarity now. We want God’s five-step plan delivered with overnight shipping. But Acts reminds us that faith often grows in the waiting.

The beautiful thing is that the disciples didn’t wait alone. Scripture says they gathered together constantly in prayer. They stayed connected. They encouraged one another. They trusted that even if they didn’t fully understand what God was doing, God was still at work.

That’s good news for us today. Sometimes the holiest thing we can do is keep showing up, keep praying, keep loving people, and keep trusting that God is preparing something bigger than we can currently see.

So if life feels uncertain right now, remember the disciples standing there looking up into the clouds. God wasn’t finished with them yet—and God isn’t finished with you either.

Grace and peace,

Pastor Jim
