Have you ever had one of those moments where everything suddenly changes in an instant? One minute the room is quiet, predictable, and calm… and the next minute it feels like someone has opened every window in the house and life has been turned upside down.

That is a little bit of what happened in Acts 2:1–21.

The disciples were gathered together after Jesus’ resurrection and ascension, probably wondering what came next. They had been told to wait for the Holy Spirit, but I imagine they did not really know what that meant. Maybe they thought God would send a memo. Perhaps an angel with a clipboard. Maybe a nice, peaceful devotional moment with soft background music.

Instead, God sent wind, fire, and a crowd.

Suddenly the sound of rushing wind filled the house. Tongues of fire appeared above their heads. The disciples began speaking in different languages, and people from all over the world heard the good news in words they could understand. Some were amazed. Others were confused. A few assumed the disciples had simply started the world’s earliest “strange church potluck incident.”

Peter quickly stood up and said, in effect, “Friends, it is only nine in the morning. Something else is going on here!”

And something else was going on. The Holy Spirit had arrived, and the church was born.

What I love about this story is that God did not wait until the disciples had everything figured out. They were still uncertain. Still imperfect. Still learning. Yet God chose that very moment to pour out the Spirit and begin changing the world through ordinary people. Honestly, that should encourage all of us.

Most of us are waiting until we feel more prepared before serving God. We think we need better prayers, deeper faith, more Bible knowledge, or fewer flaws. But Pentecost reminds us that God specializes in working through ordinary people who simply show up and stay open.

The Holy Spirit still moves today — sometimes in dramatic ways, but often in quiet ones too. Sometimes the Spirit arrives like a rushing wind. Other times it shows up in a conversation, a song, a casserole delivered to a neighbor, or the gentle courage to keep going through a difficult week.

Acts 2 reminds us that God’s Spirit is alive, active, and still bringing people together across every barrier imaginable. The Spirit speaks hope into fearful hearts, peace into anxious minds, and joy into weary souls. And maybe that is the good news we need right now.

We may not hear the rushing wind this week. Flames probably will not appear over our heads during coffee hour. (If they do, please alert the trustees.) But the same Spirit who filled those first disciples is still at work among us — encouraging, guiding, comforting, and occasionally nudging us out of our comfort zones.

So this week, may we listen for the Spirit’s movement in our lives. May we have the courage to follow where God leads. And may we remember that sometimes God’s greatest work begins when ordinary people gather together and leave a little room for holy surprise.

Grace and peace,

Pastor Jim
