Have you ever noticed how noisy life can be? Phones ring, televisions talk, lawn mowers roar, dogs bark, and somebody always seems to have something to tell us. Sometimes the quietest place we can find is the car—and even then the dashboard starts beeping because we forgot to buckle up!

In 1 Kings 19:9–18, Elijah discovers something wonderful about God. Elijah is tired, discouraged, and hiding in a cave. God tells him to come outside, and suddenly there is a powerful wind, then an earthquake, and then a fire. You would think God would certainly show up in one of those dramatic moments. But He doesn't. Instead, after all the noise and excitement, Elijah hears God in a gentle whisper.

What a wonderful reminder for us! We often expect God to work through something big and spectacular, but many times God comes to us quietly. We hear Him in a peaceful morning, a familiar hymn, a Scripture that suddenly speaks to our heart, a kind word from a friend, the laughter of a child, or a quiet moment of prayer.

Sometimes we may even feel like Elijah and wonder, "Lord, am I the only one trying?" God reminded Elijah that he wasn't alone, and He reminds us of the same thing. We are surrounded by brothers and sisters in Christ who are walking this journey with us. Even better, God Himself is always with us.

So sometime this week, turn down the television, put the phone aside, find a comfortable chair, and spend a few quiet minutes with God. You don't need fancy words. You don't even need a long prayer. Simply say, "Lord, I'm listening."

You might be surprised by what happens when the world gets quiet enough for your heart to hear.

God is still speaking. God is still working. And God isn't finished with any of us yet!

So keep listening, keep smiling, and keep following that still, small voice. God is closer than you think!
